Habits can be compared to an engine that sends energy out from the food that has been ingested in the human body. This energy is used in carrying out mechanical work by muscles and other activities of the body. Besides, energy plays an important role in maintaining the structures and functions of the body and in producing heat to control the temperature of the organism. Unlike other engines, though, the human body is always catabolising and anabolising, breaking down and constructing its parts. They provide nutrient requirements for the production of new materials and energy for the chemical processes occurring in food.
A well-balanced and proper breakfast is very essential to initiate these processes in the morning. In the morning, after waking up, one is probably famished – all the energy stores having been utilized during the night; then, a balanced breakfast is necessary to refuel the body for activities that may be ahead. If one misses breakfast, then the energy level is low, mental ability is low, and the level of performance in physical tasks is also low during the daytime.
A complete breakfast should include a mix of macronutrients: carbohydrates for quick fuel, proteins for the muscles’ repair and construction, and fats for a steady power source and the cells’ requirements. It is also proper to include micronutrients in the diet such as vitamins and minerals. Some examples of such foods include whole grains, fruits, eggs, dairy, and nuts for a healthy breakfast.
Also, eating a healthy breakfast tends to reduce one’s appetite throughout the day, possibly sparing one from overeating during lunch. It creates good precedents for healthy diets and may play a role in maintaining proper body weight. Research has also shown that those people who have breakfast are likely to have a smaller size measured in Body Mass Index (BMI) and also have the right nutritional body composition.
